The Story of Granite

This section will take you through the basics of granite and help you to understand what granite is exactly.  This will help you to realize WHY granite is such a great choice for your counter tops and what makes it so durable.  This is a great place to start your story…..

Marble, Limestone, Travertine

A timeless classic!  This section will provide you with an understanding between granite and these types of stone, plus learn about the use of these types of stone throughout history.

Engineered Stone

Man’s reinforcement of Mother Nature!  Here we will educate you on exactly what engineered stone is and the benefits of using it for your counter tops.

Exotic/Semi Precious Stones

Though not as highly used as the other types of counter top material, exotic/semi precious stones are an amazing natural occurrence which makes this section a must read no matter what material you choose!

Below is a table showing the three different ways stone is created; igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. The way each stone is formed affects the way it looks and how durable it is.

Definition

Types of Stone

Igneous

Formed deep in the earths core and formed by the liquid rock cooling and becoming a solid stone. There are two versions, intrusive (cools inside the earth), and extrusive (cools outside the earths crust). All stones in this category are refered to as “Granite”, however only intrusive igneous rocks are true granites. Granite, Basalt, Pumice, Obsidian

Sedimentary

Created by particles and minerals ‘settling’ ontop each other. Two different types of binding can occur, stone can be bound together either by natural ‘cement’ binders, or chemical binders like salt. Limestone, Shale, Sandstone, Onyx, Travertine

Metamorphic

Is formed from a pre-existing rock type in the Earth’s crust is put under variable conditions of high pressure, high temperature, chemistry and time. An example would be a limestone (which is a sedimentary stone) is pushed into the earths crust and as it nears the core, heats up and is exposed to more and more pressure. It under goes a transformation and becomes marble. Marble, Slate, Schist, Gneiss, Quartzite, Serpentine, Soapstone
